BALL OR STRIKE? Eagle 1st baseman Richard Rogalewski takes a pitch in the top of the 4th. Note the dust kicked up in front of the plate and behind it as the ball skitters away from the catcher. A COMMENT FROM THE WEBMASTER

You can't have a baseball game without umpires, but good umpires know that the game belongs to the contestants. Officiating is a tough job, and the toughest part for some umpires seems to be grasping the simple truth that if they're doing their jobs properly, they should be almost invisible.

Some game officials draw attention to themselves through their poor performance, and sadly, that was the case in this game. The officiating crew made shoddy and inconsistent judgment calls throughout the entire contest. Crockett has a good team, and they didn't need the help.

And it wasn't just the outrageous blown calls on balls and strikes or tags and forces. Twice, this officiating crew waited until the Eagles had gathered some momentum, and then they brought the flow of play to grinding halt to insist that shirttails be tucked in. Shirttails! And these were shirttails that had been out for awhile. The enforcement of the dress code is not at issue, but the peculiar timing of it sure is. By forcing so much of the focus to be on themselves, the umpires stole the game from the contestants.

No, you can't have a baseball game without umpires, but the very best umpires are the ones you never have to talk about. AISD has a number of good umpires. They were all somewhere else on April 12. No one is talking about them.

With Flora on base, and shortstop Rangel looking for the ball to be put into play, Eagle pitcher Davila faces Crockett shortstop Anthony Conklin. Davila struck Conklin out looking.

Davila has just recorded the 2nd out of the 7th on consecutive strikes and has obviously found his groove. Suddenly, the field umpire interrupts play to make Davila tuck in his shirt.

Cougar pinch hitter seals the game with this 2-out 7th-inning RBI single. Johnny Garza crossed the plate and broke the tie, giving Crockett the win.
