Eagles commence their warmup routines.

Eagle Head Coach Steve Velasquez and his Anderson counterpart, Troy Garis.

The Eagle Faithful, as seen from the field at Burger. "C'mon," hollered a fan loudly to the team, "We've waited long enough!" He wasn't talking about the starting time of the game.

Eagles Cedric Carrothers and Charles Morton participate in pregame warmups conducted by Coach Velasquez.

With a taped wooden fungo bat, Coach Velasquez (right) warms up his team, including 1st baseman Richard Rogalewski (left) and catcher Charles Morton (center).

Umps and coaches gather at home plate before the game.

The Anderson Trojans come into the game as the 2nd place team in District 16-5A, with a district record of 5-2. The Eagles are ready.

In the Eagles' dugout before the game, an umpire carefully inspects bats and helmets.

Kevin Ashmos (number 3) is the Anderson 3rd baseman who was oh-so-smug after getting away with a Bush League (and entirely illegal, by the way) hidden ball trick play when the two teams met at Nelson on the Ides of March. Ashmos drew a 2nd-inning walk and then was Oh-for-Akins for the remainder of this night.

Davila pitches in the 2nd inning. Martinez is ready in center field.

Runners are aboard, so Eagle batterymates Davila and Morton check their signs.

The Eagle dugout yells encouragements as Eagle outfielder Jordan Treviņo steps to the plate. He slammed a 2nd-inning leadoff base hit to right field.

Eagle 2nd baseman Salinas reached base on a 2nd-inning fielder's choice.

Eagle 3rd baseman Daniel Fabian grounds out here in the 2nd, but hit a single and a double in his other plate appearances.

It took 8 pitches from Davila in the top of the 3rd to mow down batters 2, 3 and 4 in the Trojan order.

Sideline huddle before the bottom of the 3rd inning. Eagles are down 1 to 0.

Rogalewski bats in the Eagle 2nd. He would get a base hit.

Eagle outfielder Airrik Martinez managed to get on base every time he came to the plate. Here he delivers a base hit to center field, but the fielder mishandled it, and Rangel and Martinez would both score on the error.

Eagle catcher Charles Morton bats in the bottom of the 3rd.

Eagle outfielder Martinez hauls in a 4th-inning fly ball off the bat of Trojan outfielder Milam Raemsch.

Backed by a stiff Eagle defense, Davila retired the side with just 4 pitches in the Anderson 4th.

Martinez slides at home for an Eagle run, one of two he would score.

Eagle 2nd baseman Martin Salinas is out at 1st after an infield ground ball.

Eagle 3rd baseman Daniel Fabian is on 2nd base after sending the ball to center field for a 4th-inning double.

Anderson batter Ryan Schapery hops out of the box in the 5th inning and positions himself directly in front of home plate in an apparent attempt to disrupt the throw of Eagle catcher Morton to 2nd base. The plate umpire made no call.

Jason Rangel's 6th-inning sacrifice fly scores Fabian, who tagged up at 3rd base and came home.

In a cloud of dust, Eagle 3rd baseman Daniel Fabian crosses the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning and scores the go-ahead run.

Anderson sent Martinez to 1st with an intentional walk in the 6th.

There was no Trojan scoring in the final stanza. This is the last pitch of the ballgame. Anderson's Ashmos grounded out to Eagle 2nd baseman Hernandez, shown here behind pitcher Jason Rangel.

EAGLES WIN! Akins 6  Anderson 5.

From the Eagles' dugout, the Eagle Faithful can be seen cheering and applauding their team.

Eagle pitchers Jason Rangel (left) and Eric Davila.

Celebrating Eagles.

Is a little too much emphasis being placed on this victory? Well, the Eagles have been playing 5A varsity baseball for three years, and this is the school's very first 5A varsity district win. Ever. It's not surprising that the team and its supporters would be excited and pleased!

We were overdue for this, and you'd better believe we're going to spend some time enjoying it.
