COMMENTS:
- GAME 1 The first opponents for the Eagles in the 2010 Judson ISD Tournament were the C.C. Winn Mavericks
from Eagle Pass. The visiting Eagles got off to a slow start offensively, but the Mavericks hit early and often, scoring 5
runs on 8 hits in just the first two innings of the game. In the top of the 4th inning, the Eagles mounted a significant comeback effort, but it fell short.
During his five innings on the mound, Eagle starter Chris Cullen gave up 12 hits, five of them for extra bases. He recorded one strikeout, one walk, one
balk and one hit batsman. Ten of Winn’s 11 runs were charged to Cullen, but two of those were unearned, following a 3rd inning fielding error by Eagle shortstop Jeremy Rubio.
Jeremy Mendez
came on in 5th-inning relief. He gave up three hits, including two for extra bases, while dispensing two walks and notching three strikeouts during his two innings of work. One earned run was charged to Mendez.
It’s worth noting that Eagle catcher Corey Pinson successfully gunned down three Maverick base runners. Pinson allowed only one runner to advance on a passed ball.
On the offensive side of the scorebook, Eagle 1st baseman Lorenzo Mendoza rapped out a base hit each of the four times he came to the plate. Eagle outfielder Jordan Stewart was 2 for 4 at the plate, and
each of his hits was a 2-bagger. As a team, the Eagles had a total of 13 hits. That might be enough to win some games; it might be enough to win most games. It did not win this game.
Chris Cullen took the loss for the Eagles.
Wagner High School baseball facility. A few comments about the baseball facilty at Wagner High School are
appropriate here. It’s very nice, and it’s well maintained. Why shouldn’t it be? A crew of paid groundskeepers leap
onto the field before every game. The field enjoys the sort of attention for which baseball yards in other districts can
only yearn. The public address system, which was overdriven and too loud last year, has a much better sound this year. However, now that you can actually identify the music that’s
being played between innings, someone should consider expanding the playlist. In the course of four games at Wagner, Eagles fans heard some of the same songs as many as a half dozen times.
The baseball field at Wagner is not friendly for photographers who might wish to shoot a few pictures through the chain link
fencing. Wrapped around the fence from one dugout to the other is a tall swath of sport screening that makes such
shots nearly impossible and blocks the few from the lower seats of the bleachers. A few rectangles are cut from the screening, but they’re all at ankle level for those on the aluminum walkway of the bleachers.

- GAME 2 Central Catholic Marianist High School is a small all-male college preparatory school located in downtown
San Antonio. Although it’s one of the largest all-male schools in the state of Texas, its entire enrollment for grades 9-12
is about the size of the Class of 2010 at Akins. Regardless of their size, the Buttons have a much better team than they showed in their Thursday afternoon outing against the Eagles.
Buttons? The name comes from the segments of a rattlesnake’s rattle. It’s a tribute to St. Mary’s University, another
Marianist institution located in San Antonio. The St. Mary’s team name is the Rattlers.
Jordan Stewart was the starting pitcher for the Eagles, and he pitched the entire run-rule shortened contest. He gave
up 2 runs (1 earned run) on 7 hits. Stewart delivered 7 strikeouts and 5 walks and was the winning pitcher.
At bat, eight Eagles got base hits. Pitcher Jordan Stewart, catcher Blake Hoffman
and designated hitter Corey Pinson all had extra-base hits, and they all came in the Eagles’ 10-run 1st inning.
Traveling in style.
Thanks to the Akins Baseball Booster Club, the Eagles traveled to and from the Thursday and Friday tournament games in a big white chartered bus. The Booster Club also footed the bill for
some of the meals while the players were on the road. The Baseball Booster Club raises money through a number of projects, including operation of a concession stand at Akins Field and cleaning Royal Memorial Stadium after
some University of Texas home football games.
Ruben Garza, the bus driver for Todd Charters, became an Eagles fan during his two days with the team.

- GAME 3 On Friday, the second day of the Judson Tournament, the Eagles met the Warriors of Earl Warren High School from San Antonio’s Northside Independent School District. The contest began
at 11:30 AM at Wagner High School.
Andres Ruiz started on the mound for the home team Eagles, and he
went the 7-inning distance, giving up 4 hits and just 1 run - and that run was unearned. Gordo rang up a single strikeout, but he walked no one, and he managed
to face an overall average of just 3.7 batters per inning. By the end of the game, Ruiz had thrown just seventy-four pitches. Ruiz was the winning pitcher.
At the plate, Eagle pitcher Ruiz was 2 for 4 with an extra-base hit, as was Eagle 2nd baseman Robert Franco. The Eagles had a total of nine hits on the game.

- GAME 4 The Eagles’ Friday afternoon Judson Tournament game matched the boys in Navy blue and Vegas gold
against the Wagner Thunderbirds, on whose field the festivities were taking place. The Eagles were the visitors, allowing Wagner to be the home team in its own house.
Kenny Davis
started for the Eagles, but it just wasn’t going to be his day. Davis gave up hits to three of the Thunderbirds’ first six batters, and he walked the remaining three. With the score at 3-0 and nobody out, reliever
Keith Thompkins came to the mound. Thompkins struck out two, and he got the final Wagner batter to fly out to right field, but he also hit a batter. By the top of the 2nd inning, the score had been inflated to 4-0.
In the 2nd inning, A.J. Delgado led off and was hit by a pitch, an event he turned into an Eagle run, with the help of a Thunderbird error. Tony Vega
reached base on a fielder’s choice, stole 2nd base, and scored the Eagles’ second run of the game. The Thunderbirds scored in the bottom of the 2nd inning, and the score was 5-2.
A word about officiating.
The Wagner run that scored in the 2nd inning was Evan Gonzales. Gonzales was the leadoff batter for the inning, and he had reached base on an error. When he attempted to steal 2nd base, Eagle catcher Blake Hoffman
made a perfect throw to shortstop Jeremy Rubio. Gonzales appeared to be out by at least half a foot. See the image, above. The field umpire called him safe. The two Wagner players
immediately following Gonzales were put out. Gonzales would never have scored without help from the umpire’s questionable call at 2nd base. Does one run matter? Well, consider that this very game was decided by just one run!
The umpires who called the Akins-Wagner game also officiated the next game. Their calls in that contest generated so
much frustration, alarm and vocal disbelief that the coaching staffs of BOTH teams were confined to their respective dugouts. That’s a fact that tells a story.
Meanwhile, Eagle batters began whittling away at the Wagner lead. A strong Eagle 5th inning saw the score become tied at 5, thanks to three walks, an error, a base hit by DH Corey Pinson
and a timely RBI single by Eagle outfielder Shawn Whitely.
In the bottom of the 5th, Thompkins allowed a single by Thunderbird catcher
Desi Guerrero, and with the score knotted in a 5-5 tie, Eagle Coach Steve Velasquez called on righthander Jordan Stewart to finish the game. While
Stewart was pitching to Thunderbird 1st baseman Rey Mendez, Guerrero attempted to steal 2nd base. Once again, Blake Hoffman made the throw for a perfect tag by Jeremy Rubio
. This time, the field official recognized it.
Stewart hit batter Mendez and walked Jon Sanchez, the number 9 batter in
the order. With two on base, two out, the score tied and facing the top of the order, Stewart struck out the next two batters to end the inning. The score remained tied.
In the top of the 6th (and final) inning, Eagle leadoff batter Andres Ruiz was hit by a pitch. An RBI double from the bat of Jeremy Rubio
scored Ruiz. Rubio, himself, scored on a passed ball and aggressive base running, The score going into Wagner’s half of the inning was Eagles 7, Thunderbirds 5. Stewart gave up two hits in the bottom of the 6th;
one of the runners eventually scored. But Stewart closed out the inning with a strikeout, a long fly out to left fielder Tony Vega
, and another strikeout. Time had run out. The final score was Eagles 7, Wagner 6. Stewart was credited with the win.

- GAME 5 Ten teams competed in the Judson Tournament, and they were split into two pools. Having won the
“south” pool among teams competing at Wagner High School, the Eagles faced the winner of the “north” pool in a
single game on Saturday afternoon at Steele High School. The “north” games had all been played at Steele, and the Reagan Rattlers had won that pool.
Kenny Davis and Chris Cullen shared the pitching duties for the Eagles, but neither proved to be particularly effective. The Rattlers scored 10 runs on 7 hits, which included a
triple and a home run. The Eagles were limited to 4 hits, and were able to move none of their base runners across the plate.
Officiating ... what, again?
When the Eagles arrived to warm up for their 1 o’clock game, a previous contest was already in progress between Steele and C.C. Winn. Who
were the officials for that game? Well, actually, there was only one; the second official simply hadn’t shown up. The Eagles’ game, the championship game of the tournament, was
delayed while another umpire was located. The resulting officiating wasn’t good, and poor officiating is always irksome.
Even as his team slid to a relatively easy victory, the Reagan head coach hectored and belittled the umpires openly and
unceasingly. Watching his antics, an observer had to wonder about the line between whining and abuse. However,
Coach Chapman did indirectly prove his point about the poor quality of the officiating. An umpire of even mediocre ability and command of the game wouldn’t have put up with such base behavior.
The Eagles had too little to offer between the white lines on this afternoon. Reagan won the game by being 10 runs ahead after four innings. Davis went into the books as the losing pitcher.
