WEBMASTER’S COMMENTARY:
- February 28. In the Thursday afternoon game against the McCallum Knights at Leander High School, the Eagles weren’t able to put
together enough of an offensive attack to get on the scoreboard. Eagles Matt Cavazos and Brandon Rivera both recorded extra base
hits, but the Eagle bats were otherwise quiet. Cavazos went the distance on the mound, recording 5 strikeouts, while allowing 3 walks and 8 hits in the 3-0 losing effort.
- February 28. The Thursday evening tournament game pitted the Eagles against the Belton Tigers at Rockwell Field on the campus of
Southwestern University. Regulars Matt Cavazos and Kyle Smith were missing from the Eagle lineup. Tiger pitcher Jacob Phillipe was
the obvious class of the game, issuing just one walk on his way to a no-hit 10-0 mercy rule shortened shutout of the Eagles.
Congratulations to him on his accomplishment. Far less classy, in the view of many observers, was Belton Head Coach David Tidwell,
who left his devastating ace on the mound long after the humiliation of the lackluster Eagles was complete. With far too little
resistance from the Eagles, Phillipe got his no-no. That’s baseball. Regardless of how it got there, there’s no doubt it’ll look
meaningful and impressive in the record book, and I suppose that’s what it was all about for Coach Tidwell. But as you stand there
grinding your heel into the throat of your short-handed and overmatched opponent, I have just one word for you, Brother Dave.
Karma. May you learn its meaning thoroughly.
- February 29. The Eagles met the Keller Indians for a mid-afternoon tournament game on Friday. Tyler Pinson pitched 5 innings for the
Eagles, with Brandon Small coming on in late relief. Randy Berg went 3 for 4 at the plate. The Eagles made it to the scoreboard this
time, but once again they were dealt a loss. Keller outplayed the Eagles and came out on top 9-4.
- February 29. Eagle senior Kyle Smith opened the late afternoon game with his first mound appearance of the season. The Leander
Lions were playing on their own diamond, and the home field advantage was most apparent when the press box announcer played
music between pitches when the Eagles were in the field. But the truth is they probably could have played polka music over the
loudspeakers throughout the entire game and it wouldn’t have changed anything. Jordan Stewart and Nick Rios were brought in to
relieve Smith in the 4th inning, but by the 5th inning, the Lions were ahead 11-0, and the mercy rule was invoked to end the game.
- March 01. The Eagles faced the Temple Wildcats in game at high noon on Saturday at Cedar Park High School. Randy Berg was the
starting pitcher for the Eagles, and Brandon Small came to the mound in relief. Akins jumped out to an early lead, on the strength of a
1st inning leadoff triple off the bat of Julian Gonzales and an RBI base hit by Brandon Rivera. However, that was the extent of the
Eagle scoring, and it didn’t take the Wildcats long to take the lead. They never looked back, winning by a score of 9-1 in 7 innings.
