RESULTS & COMMENTARY:
02/24/11 GAME 1    Akins Eagles 02  Highland Owls 03
The Eagles battled the Owls in a 7-inning pitching duel. Both starting pitchers went the distance, winning pitcher Rory Rivera for Highlands and losing pitcher Kenny Davis for Akins. The Eagles failed to capitalize on opportunities, losing two runners at 3rd base and stranding two others there. Roger Herrera and Tim Jackson both hit triples, and neither scored.

Davis recorded 6 strikeouts, while issuing only two walks and giving up just two hits, a 4th inning double and a 7th inning single. Unfortunately, both scores, as did a 5th inning hit Owl batsman.

Eagle bats delivered a modest 5 hits, but 3 of those belonged to Herrera, who hit each time he came to the plate.

02/25/11 GAME 2     Akins Eagles 32  Sam Houston Hurricanes 01
The Eagles dominated an overmatched Sam Houston team in this losers’ bracket game. Winning pitcher Robbie Smith threw six strikeouts in two innings. Reliever Robert Franco pitched five strikeouts in two innings. At the plate, eleven different Eagles got base hits. Taylor Rutland smashed a 3rd-inning 2-RBI home run.

The losing pitcher was Mackowski. The tournament’s mercy rule was invoked after the 4th inning.

02/26/11 GAME 3    Akins Eagles 06  Edison Bears 10
The visiting Eagles gave up just one unearned run in the first two innings, but the 3rd inning was a 9-run defensive disaster sprinkled with base hits and walks. The inning included a crucial error early in the inning and a misplayed ball (ten batters later!) that allowed a 3-RBI double. The Eagles, who had led the ballgame 3-1 going into the 3rd inning, were unable to recover from their 3rd inning defensive meltdown. Acting on a fielder’s choice, Tim Jackson made a nice tag on Joey Gonzales at 3rd base to end the inning, and Paul Castro was quietly effective at 2nd base throughout the game, but the damage had been inflicted.

At the plate, the Eagles managed 9 hits. Two were for extra bases: Justin Pecchia’s 2nd inning double and Robert Franco’s 3rd inning RBI triple.

The winning pitcher for Edison was Seth Henry. The losing pitcher for the Eagles was starter Justin Pecchia, who threw a healthy 6 strikeouts, but gave up 4 walks and 5 earned runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. The Bears went on to play for the consolation trophy, while the Eagles got on the bus and went home. The Eagles closed out their appearance in the 2011 SAISD Tournament with an unimpressive 1-2 tourney record and are now 1-3 for the season.
