RESULTS / COMMENTS:

EAGLES 14, LANIER 02.  The Eagles won their opening game of the tournament handily on Field #1Thursday against an overmatched team from San Antonio’s Sidney Lanier High School. Chris Cullen started on the mound for the Eagles, and Amelio Torres came on in 5th inning relief. Cullen was the winning pitcher and Jonathan Garza of Lanier was the losing pitcher. The Eagle offense struck early, hanging 9 runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Eagle batters recorded a total of 11 hits in a game the was shortened to 5 innings by the 10-run mercy rule. Jordan Stewart’s 2nd inning RBI double was the only extra-base hit for the Eagles. Eagle pitching kept the bats of the Voks quiet, allowing only one hit.

EAGLES 01, BRACKENRIDGE  08.  On Friday, action for the Eagles shifted to Field #2. Akins team members wore their white uniforms with “EAGLES” across the chest, while the Brackenridge team wore its white uniforms with “EAGLES” across the chest. Stewart and Mendoza had extra base hits for the Eagles. Andres Ruiz started for the home team Eagles, and Amelio Torres relieved in the 5th. Errors and inconsistent play hurt the Eagles in this game. Brackenridge went on to play in the tournament’s 3rd place game.

EAGLES 10, SOUTHWEST 07.  Saturday’s tournament competition for the Eagles was on Field #3, a bizarre pie-wedge shaped piece of athletic real estate. The tournament provides no restroom facilities on site, and it makes no drinking water available to the players. Maybe the second omission is because of the first. Jordan Stewart pitched a complete game for the Eagles and was the winning pitcher, recording 8 strikeouts and issuing only 4 scattered walks. In a game in which the Eagles scored 10 runs, Eagle catcher Corey Pinson batted in 8 runs. On base as a courtesy runner for Pinson, Chris Cullen scored the final run. Six of Pinson’s RBIs came on two 3-RBI home runs, one in the 3rd inning and one in the 4th. All told, Pinson was 4 for 4 at the plate. In addition to the two round trips, he had an RBI triple and an RBI single. Julian Gonzales and Jordan Stewart were each 2 for 4 in the batter’s box; one of Stewart’s hits went for an extra base.
