WEBMASTER’S COMMENTARY:
- Karen Wagner High School and Byron Steele High School hosted the games for this tournament. Wagner and Steele are two relatively
new schools in a rapidly growing part of Texas, on San Antonio’s northeast side and beyond. Both schools have impressive baseball
facilities and, for the most part, nicely maintained fields. During the tournament, the groundskeepers at Wagner got carried away with
their watering, leaving a soggy pitching mound in need of too-frequent repair, and creating a perpetual swamp in front of the visiting team’s dugout. Nevertheless, it must be very nice to have paid groundskeepers.
The tournament was reasonably well run. Games started on time, umpires were there when they were supposed to be. Parking was
never a problem. Those are small things that are seldom mentioned, because a good tournament coordinator makes them transparent.
On the other hand, the Wagner scoreboard malfunctioned often, and the operators of the scoreboard-mounted public address system
at Wagner played music at an inappropriately loud level during almost every moment the ball wasn’t in play, and even sometimes when it was. Perhaps that’s just a local custom. It’s nice to have a scoreboard.
From the point of view of an Eagles fan, the games themselves were not pretty. There’s no way to sugar coat the fact that the Eagles
finished Oh for Tournament. Twice, the Eagles were run-ruled in the 4th inning. Twice, the Eagles lost by a margin of 1 run or less.
MARCH 05 Eagles 2, Hays 13.
The initial game of the tournament for the Eagles was with Hays, a familiar rival. The visiting Eagles
wore their blue jerseys and scored first. Eagle 3rd baseman Jordan Stewart reached base on a 1st-inning throwing error by Hays
sophomore shortstop Ryan Slaughter. A double from Eagle catcher Corey Pinson on the very next pitch moved the runner to 3rd. An RBI single from the bat of Eagle 1st baseman Lorenzo Mendoza scored Stewart.
The Eagles scored only once more. In the 3rd inning, Eagle outfielder Julian Gonzales accepted a leadoff walk, and then he stole 2
bases before shortstop Jeremy Rubio grounded out to 2nd base and batted in the run. Meanwhile, Hays was scoring 13 runs. The runs
came mostly from walks and singles; Hays batted the entire side in the bottom of the 1st. Hays 3rd baseman Jonathan Gonzales hit two over the fence. Slaughter hit an RBI double in the 3rd.
The game was called after 3 and a half innings, because of the tournament’s “10 runs after 4 innings” mercy rule. Hays has a good
team this year. The Eagles may be capable of delivering a far different level of competition, but they didn’t show it in this game.

MARCH 05 Eagles 8, Winn 16.
The Eagles had 8 hits. The only extra base hit for the Eagles was a 7th inning RBI double by outfielder Julian Gonzales. Jordan Stewart started on the mound for the Eagles. Keith Thompkins came on in 7th inning relief.
The home team Eagles wore blue again, They trailed from the 3rd inning, but they kept within striking range for most of the game. In
the top of the 7th inning, however, the game simply left the Eagles behind. Everyone in the Winn lineup scored in that inning. Some scored twice.

MARCH 06 Eagles 4, Judson 15.
The Eagles played a tournament game on Friday morning at Steele High School. It was the only
game the Eagles didn’t play at Wagner High. Wearing their white uniforms for the only time in the tournament, the Eagles were the
home team. Andres Ruiz was the starting pitcher. Kenny Davis relieved in the 2nd inning, and Keith Rodriguez went to the mound in the 4th inning.
Ruiz gave up a 1st inning grand slam to Judson designated hitter Casey Teague. Eagle bats totaled 4 hits, none for an extra base.
The game was called after 4 innings, because of the tournament’s “10 runs after 4 innings” mercy rule.

MARCH 06 Eagles 6, Marshall 6.
The Eagles were designated to be the visitors in this afternoon game, and they wore their blue
jerseys. The Eagles tied the game at 3 in the 2nd inning, and then fought back from a 6-3 deficit to tie the game again in the 6th inning.
Andres Ruiz was the Eagles’ starting pitcher. Amelio Torres and Keith Rodriguez came on in late inning relief. Shortstop Jeremy Rubio and 3rd baseman Jordan Stewart both had extra-base hits for the Eagles.
Because of the the tournament time limit, the game was called in the 6th inning with the score tied 6-6. Coaches and umpires met for a
coin toss to determine the winner. Marshall called heads, won the toss, and was declared winner of the game..

MARCH 07 Eagles 9, Wagner 10. The wind was fierce throughout this game; it blew out to left field constantly. Eagle 3rd baseman
Jordan Stewart hit a 1st inning grand slam home run to left field, scoring (in addition to himself) Andres Ruiz and Jeremy Rubio, who
had both been walked, as well as Chris Cullen, the courtesy runner for catcher Corey Pinson, who had singled past the shortstop.
Eagle 1st baseman Lorenzo Mendoza recorded a double in the 5th inning, and Pinson recorded two 2-baggers (2nd and 6th innings).
Keith Rodriguez was the Eagles’ starting pitcher. Chris Cullen relieved in the 5th inning.
In the 6th inning, Wagner’s Aaron Warren attempted to score from 3rd base. He was met by Eagle catcher Corey Pinson, who had the
ball in his glove and made the tag. The home plate umpire saw the ball subsequently drop from Pinson’s glove. He did not see Warren
swat the catcher’s mitt with his black-gloved left hand. Even so, the umpire could surely have been expected to see that Warren did
not make an attempt to avoid a collision. In fact, it appeared that the runner deliberately attempted to “body-up” by veering into the
catcher. There is no “must slide rule,” but Warren should have been called out and ejected immediately for not attempting to avoid a
collision with a fielder who possessed the ball. Instead, the collison was allowed to happen without penalty, the ball somehow became
loose, and the run counted. In a game that was decided by a single run, it was a significant play.
