A little light narrative

The Lockhart Lions have nice field. It's maybe just a bit undersized for a high school baseball yard, but the facility is well maintained and the friendly Lockhart fans can be justifiably proud of the solid "small town" feel of their home field.

There's a sense of history here, too. A coach who, as a student, played on this exact same field, tells a current player to check for a foul ball in the back yard of an adjacent house "where the sleeping dog is." The coach admits the dog has been gone for years, but everyone knows which yard.

After dark at the ballpark, a few lights are turned on. Sadly, "a few" is all they have. By actual light meter measurement, Lockhart is the most inadequately lit field on which the Eagles play baseball at night. It had been tied with Oates Field at Garrison Park in Austin for the dubious honor of the Bat Cave Award, but Oates improved its lighting in 2013, leaving Lockhart alone in the cellar, almost literally.

The Texas sun goes down early in February. By the 7:07 PM CST starting time of this scrimmage, the sun has been below the horizon for almost an hour. It is quite dark by the end of the 1st inning. And not just in the nearby yard where the dog used to sleep.
