Webmaster’s Comment

   In the top of the 4th inning, the home plate umpire took a ball to the arm. It obviously hurt a great deal. The custom in baseball at all levels is for the catcher to ask for time, while he trots out to the mound and fabricates something to say to his pitcher. The sole purpose is to kill time, so that the umpire can shake off the sting. Umpires, by the way, extend the same courtesy to hurt catchers by doing things like taking extra time to dust off plates that don’t really need it.
   Eagle catcher Randy Berg asked for time and went to the mound to exchange lasagna recipes with pitcher Martin Salinas. When it appeared that the plate umpire was going to need a few extra moments to gather himself, the field umpire walked over to the mound and extended the conversation.
   Bastrop Coach Mark Willoughby was incensed. “What?” he yelled at the Eagle bench as he gestured to the mound, “Is this guy on your staff?”
   A bystander explained that the home plate umpire had been hurt.
   “I’m aware of that!” Willoughby barked back contemptuously.

   Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Coach Mark Willoughby, a Truly Classy Guy.

Bastrop pinch hitter Alex Casarez hit an RBI single, scoring the 1st of 3 Bear runs in the 6th.

With a runner on base, Eagle 1st baseman Martin Salinas charges when the Bastrop batter squares to bunt.

Daniel Fabian’s heads-up throw to home for the force would stop Bastrop lead runner Ray Ross, but trailing runner Cole Staton would later score.
