Eagle Varsity v. Hays Rebels
Monday, March 20, 2006, 7:00 PM
@ Burger Field, Sunset Valley,Texas

Before the game, the Eagle dugout sits empty, its players warming up on the field, their jerseys hanging on the fence.

Two thunderstorms rumbled through South Austin the night before the game. The grass at Burger has never looked better, but the dirt around home plate is a sand box.

Coaches and umpire meet at the plate.

Webmaster’s Comment

It’s clear that AISD has a tough time attracting and keeping good baseball umpires. There are some very good ones in the ranks, but I’ve seen too many examples of those who are unqualified or simply unsuited for the job.

Monday’s officials didn’t affect the outcome of the game. If Hays received any significant gifts, they were from the Eagles themselves. But after a couple of breathtakingly questionable calls, Monday night’s home plate gem announced loudly and rather frantically, “I’m running the show tonight!

It’s been my experience that if someone has to TELL you he’s running the show, he’s probably capable of running little more than his mouth. Through demonstrated performance, a competent professional leaves no doubt about who’s qualified and entitled to be in charge. He doesn’t have to tell you, because the question never arises.
