Who was Toney Burger, for whom the Activity Center and its baseball field are named? Elton T. "Toney" Burger was born in 1905 and started coaching for the Austin Independent School District in 1939. He died in Austin at the age of 89, 9 years after the facility bearing his name was constructed.

HITS! Eagles huddle on the sideline before the top of the 3rd. It's time for Eagle bats to start making that satisfying aluminum "ping" sound.

Eagle shortstop Jason Rangel listens to a little chin music, as Austin pitcher Wes Willis sends a pitch high and inside in the 3rd inning.

Remnants of a sunset linger in the western sky beyond Burger Field in the 2nd inning,

Rogalewski scores the go-ahead run for the Eagles.

Salinas (right) hit a single and advanced to 2nd on a passed ball, to 3rd on a throwing error by the catcher and finally to home on a pitcher's balk.

Yes, of course it's only the final score that counts, but midway through the game it's nice to be leading the team that's atop the district standings.

Trailing by just 1 run, Eagles huddle before batting in the 7th inning.

Despite running the count to full and slicing this foul ball, Hohertz goes down on strikes.

... as does Martinez.

... and Morton.

Final scoreboard.

The Eagles came up short in this late-season Tuesday night game, and another "L" in the win/loss column may be all that anyone that anyone ever records or remembers of the contest - except on this page! But our Eagles matched the Austin Maroons stride for stride throughout most of this seesaw battle, making an identical number of hits and unfortunately, even the same number of errors.

The Maroons came into the game headed for the playoffs atop the district standings. The Eagles were playing, as the sportscasters like to say, only for pride. Austin High earned the win and retains its ranking.

The Akins Eagles absolutely deserve to have it said that they found their pride.

Postgame handshakes. The Eagles gave the Maroons a heck of a game!

Eagles huddle for a few words from Coach Velasquez after the game.
