Hidden ball trick. Eagle catcher  #22 Morton hit an RBI triple. Time out was called. Eagle Coach Velasquez substituted #10 Evans to run for #22 Morton at 3rd. Play was resumed ILLEGALLY. Anderson 3rd baseman #23 Ashmos waited until #10 Evans took a lead from the base and then tagged him with the ball he'd been hiding during the timeout. The umpire called Evans out.

UIL uses Major League Baseball rules unless some specific exception is made. Section 5.10 of the MLB rules says the ball becomes dead when a substitution is made. In the Anderson game, Evans was substituted for Morton at 3rd base. The ball was dead.

Section 5.11 of the MLB rules says that play cannot resume until the pitcher assumes his position on the pitching rubber with the ball in his possession. Because the Anderson 3rd baseman was hiding the ball all along, the pitcher could not have had it in his possession as he assumed his position on the pitching plate. Play could not officially resume. A runner cannot be tagged out while time is out and the ball is dead.

The Umpires Blew It! Hidden ball tricks are Bush League gimmicks, but if they're done by the rules, they can be legal. This one was not. You'd expect the hired officials at a 5A district game to know the rules of baseball. These did not.

Coming into 3rd on his triple, Morton couldn't decide whether to slide head first or feet first - so he just dove and nuked the bag! Here he shakes off the dust. Coach Velasquez laughed and would say later that a dump truck of dirt was required to replace the divot Morton left when he detonated the base. Meanwhile, Anderson 3rd baseman Kevin Ashmos (23) has the ball hidden in his glove and will pull it out to tag Derek Evans, who was brought in as a base running replacement for Morton during a called time out. Anderson's execution of the old hidden ball trick was illegal, but the umpires were ignorant of the applicable rules of baseball, and Evans was called out to end the inning.

Davila pitches in the bottom of the 6th and would go the distance. Salinas is playing 2nd base.

JD Hernandez comes to the plate in the 7th inning.
