In the mist of a late afternoon, the Eagle squad warms up at San Gabriel Park field, an interesting baseball venue sited on a rolling hill. Left field is a good 3 feet lower than home plate.

Eagle shortstop Jason Rangel experiments with new ways to distract opposing pitchers.

Eagle outfielder Derek Evans is caught stealing 2nd base in the top of the 1st inning.

Eagle catcher Kevin Deleon straps on the "tools of ignorance."

The Eagle Faithful brought umbrellas.

Martinez in center tucks away a fly ball for the 1st out of bottom of the 1st.

Deleon behind the plate.

Righthander Richard Rogalewski opens for the Eagles.

As the Eagle dugout looks on, outfielder Airrik Martinez bats in the 1st inning.

Eagles infielders meet at the mound before the bottom of the 1st inning.

Deleon stands on 1st after becoming one of only three Eagles to record a base hit in the game.

Derek Evans waits in the on deck circle.

Eagle 2nd baseman Martin Salinas swings the bat in the 2nd inning.

Eagle 1st baseman Charles Morton holds McCallum's Brian Palmer on the bag.

Eagle 3rd baseman Daniel Fabian.

Running for Rogalewski, who drew a walk in his turn at bat, Jordan Treviņo takes a lead at 1st base.

Rogalewski pitched 4 scoreless innings before running into trouble in the 5th.

Morton stretches for a throw from Rangel in the bottom of the 3rd, and McCallum catcher Charlie Gore becomes the first out of that half-inning.

Eagle 2nd baseman Salinas slides over to give assistance as Morton catches a popup just barely in fair territory.

Daniel Guerra (right) runs for Deleon.

Eagle outfielder Airrik Martinez slams a 4th-inning single into left field.

Martinez avoids a pickoff by sliding headfirst back into 1st. He sprinted to 3rd on the resulting overthrow.

It's hard to do, but McCallum pitcher Kyle Lusson delivers a pitch that's over Rogalewski's head. Rogalewski hit a sacrifice fly that scored Martinez for the Eagles' only run.

Eagle Head Coach Steve Velasquez.

Not afraid to get dirty. Eagle 3rd baseman Daniel Fabian.

Eagle outfielder Daniel Leal reaches base in the top of the 5th on a fielder's choice.

Fabian bats in the top of the 4th.

Daniel Guerra runs for Deleon, who walked in the top of the 5th inning.

Coach Velasquez huddles with his batters and base runners.

Eagle runners at the corners. Daniel Leal is at 3rd base and Derek Evans is at 1st in the top of the 5th inning.

Not afraid to get wet. The Eagle Faithful watch from the stands.

Running up hill from the sunken outfield, Martinez runs up on a ball in the grass just beyond the base path.

Dusk approahes in San Gabriel Park, and righthander Jordan Treviņo comes on in 5th-inning relief for the Eagles.

Despite the very best expert advisors, volunteer scoreboard operator Brittany Arndt still managed to get the display to say the game was in its 15th inning. Click on the image.

Morton's single in this 6th-inning plate appearance was one of 3 Eagle hits.

You're right, of course. But come on ... would it really be a baseball game without it?

Martin Salinas shows a bunt. He wound up on 1st base with a walk.

Gathering darkness cannot dissuade The Eagle Faithful.

Derek Evans. The final Eagle batter.

Eagle shortstop Rangel and McCallum base runner Charlie Gore in the bottom of the 6th.

Pinch hitter Matt Hohertz batted for Fabian in the top of the 7th and drew a base on balls.

The Eagles committed only one recordable fielding error in the McCallum game, but that was one too many. Just as importantly, the team failed to capitalize on its offensive opportunities. Ten Eagle batters reached base. Only one would make it home to score. Eagle batters delivered only 3 base hits, and those were spread out over 3 different innings. It's tough to sustain any kind of scoring rally that way.

Righthander Richard Rogalewski pitched 4 effective and scoreless innings before giving up 3 earned runs in the 5th. Reliever Jordan Treviņo couldn't quite stop the bleeding. Still, you can win a lot of baseball games when your opponent has just 5 runs.

... Unless you have just 1 run.
