RESULTS & COMMENTARY (Preliminary. Subject to revision.):

GAME 1 (02/23/17): Eagle pitching dominated this contest. Starting left-handed pitcher Jason Porter struck out the first four batters he faced. Porter allowed no hits and no runs in his four innings on the mound. He walked four, but only one runner made it as far as 2nd base, and that was on a throwing error by the catcher. In relief, RHP Conner Archer maintained the shutout for the remaining two innings. He allowed two walks, but administered two 6th-inning strikeouts that caught the batters looking. Porter and Archer each induced a double play (Porter-to-Cruz-to-Martinez, and Machuca-to-Cruz-to-Martinez).

At the plate, eight different Eagles hit safely for a total of nine hits in the 6-inning game. Adam Gutierrez was the one with two hits. The 6th-inning double of Matthew Jimenez was the only extra-base hit. The Eagles capitalized on errors by Lee players. Three of the Eagles’ 6 runs were unearned.

The game, which commenced pretty much on time at 1:33 PM CST, was called after completion of the 6th inning at 3:23 PM, per the tournament time limit rules.

FINAL SCORE: LEE VOLUNTEERS 0, AKINS EAGLES 6

GAME 2
(02/24/17):

GAME 3 (02/24/17): The Eagles drew first blood and briefly led the game in the 2nd inning, but Eagle pitching proved not to be a match for the Second Baptist bats. Starting right-hander Adam Gutierrez gave up 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings; three of those were 2-baggers. Three Eagle fielding errors in the 5th contributed to a 6-run inning for Second Baptist. Seven of Second Baptist’s runs were unearned. RHP Darrin Daniel came on in 5th-inning relief. He allowed 3 hits and saw 3 unearned runs cross the plate in his 1 1/3-inning appearance. Two of those two runners were his.

Eagle bats weren’t exactly quiet. Akins had nine hits overall, but except for a 3-run flurry of activity in the top of the 5th, Eagle hits were too widely separated to inflict much coordinated damage. An exception: Eagle outfielder David Wilson had a 2-RBI double in the 5th.

FINAL SCORE: AKINS EAGLES 5, SECOND BAPTIST 13

GAME 4
(02/25/17):
